Everett Eissenstat is one of the United States’ leading experts on international trade and global economic policy, having served in senior roles in the White House, the U.S. Congress, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, and a Fortune 50 company. He currently serves as a partner in the Public Policy Practice Group at Squire Patton Boggs, where he advises global companies and organizations on geopolitical risk management, international economic policy, and global trade and investment strategies.

During a distinguished government career spanning more than two decades, Everett served as Deputy Assistant to the President for International Economic Affairs and Deputy Director of the National Economic Council at the White House. In this role, he coordinated interagency policy development and implementation on international economic matters and served as the President’s personal representative and principal negotiator to the G7, G20, and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economic summits, leading U.S. preparations for these major international meetings.

Earlier in his career, Everett served as Chief International Trade Counsel to the Chairman of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee, where he advised on all international trade matters before the committee and helped shape U.S. trade policy and legislation. His responsibilities included Trade Promotion Authority, implementation of free trade agreements, customs authorization, sanctions policy, and oversight of U.S. government trade agencies and negotiations. During this time, he played a key role in securing congressional approval of major trade legislation and implementing multiple bilateral and regional trade agreements.

He also served as Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for the Americas, where he led negotiations of comprehensive bilateral free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama, and Peru, and played a key role in the implementation of the Dominican Republic?Central America?United States Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA).

In this role, he helped the company navigate complex policy challenges including labor relations, global supply chain disruptions, and the regulatory implications of the transition from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles.

Everett also serves as the James R. Schlesinger Distinguished Professor at the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia, where he participates in policy research, academic collaboration, and public policy discussions across the university.
