Ali Tabrizi is a self-taught Cinematographer, Presenter, and Director of Netflix’s groundbreaking documentary, ‘Seaspiracy’. He is Founder of Disrupt Studios and an inspiring speaker on sustainability, conservation, human and animal rights and the future of food.
Tabrizi’s sensational film ‘Seaspiracy’ (March, 2021) has sparked debate across the world. The documentary, which investigates the environmental and ecological impact of the fishing industry, quickly climbed to Netflix’s Top Ten most popular films across the globe. Initially Tabrizi started the project as a means to show “how incredible the oceans are”, however the narrative of the film changed upon the shocking revelations that the fishing industry is the leading threat to our ocean. Tabrizi exposes a number of issues, ranging from the disposal of plastic trash such as fishing nets and the harm caused to marine animals as ‘bycatch’, to accusations of slavery and corruption within the fishing industry, NGOs and governments.
He founded Disrupt Studios, a media company willing to break the rules of traditional documentary filmmaking with the goal of disrupting the status quo and exploring complex global issues. Along with his wife Lucy Tabrizi, Ali has also set up the Disrupt Foundation with the mission to improve the lives of people, animals and the health of ecosystems through their ongoing work to ensure a prosperous and thriving planet for current and future generations.
Tabrizi’s personal story has shaped his career. Growing up on the South Coast of England, he spent much of his childhood daydreaming about the ocean and the hidden world beneath the waves. He moved to Iran with his family for several years during a time of political turmoil and revolution, which sparked an interest in war photojournalism. Ali studied Art & Design and Art History at Canterbury College and was accepted to London College of Communication to study photojournalism but turned down the offer and travelled solo to India to pursue filmmaking instead. He soon discovered his passion for environmental concerns and felt compelled to expose the truth.
Ali Tabrizi received worldwide acclaim for his work on ‘Seaspiracy’, which has catapulted him into the centre of conversations around sustainability and conservation. He has become a figurehead for the Ocean Conservation and Plant Based movement and has inspired many others to follow suit, having exposed the realities of industrial fishing and farming practices. He is a highly sought-after speaker for his insights on sustainability, human rights, animal welfare and everything he has learnt during his career as a documentary filmmaker.
