Fernando Vilarino is an Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB), Barcelona, Spain, and Associate Director at the Computer Vision Center (CVC). He lectures on Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Multimedia Systems. His main research interests include Image Processing, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, and Medical Image Analysis.
In 2006, Vilarino earned his Ph.D. in Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence from UAB and has conducted research stages at leading institutions in computer vision and machine learning, including the Computer Vision Center in Barcelona.
From 2018 to 2021, Vilarino served as Chair of the Executive Board of the European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL), and he was an Executive Board Member from February 2017 until December 2023. Although he no longer holds an official board position, he actively coordinates the Action-oriented Task Force on AI Social Impact within ENoLL and participates in community development, capacity building programs, workshops, and events.
ENoLL, founded in 2006 by 19 European Union cities, is now a global network with over 400 member organizations promoting user-driven open innovation through citizen participation to tackle urban and societal challenges.
Vilarino received the Google Research Award in 2014 and the Barcelona Mobile Week Award in 2017 for the @BrossaInedit project. He is also a recipient of the Spanish Government’s Ramon y Cajal Fellowship.
As Associate Director of the Computer Vision Center, he supports research and technology transfer efforts in Catalonia, Spain, and across the EU. He organizes seminars and workshops on AI ethics, civic engagement, and societal impact. Additionally, he is involved in research on innovation and digital transformation in cultural sectors such as libraries and museums.
