Jeffrey White works broadly in the field of philosophy of technology with an emphasis in ethics of artificial intelligence. He has worked recently at KAIST, where he developed courses including robot ethics, minds and machines, and philosophy of information. Currently, he is finishing a series of three papers for the APA Newsletter on Philosophy and computing exposing the structure essential to consciousness, the potential for consciousness within an artificial agent, and the value of computational models in consciousness research. Also this year, his paper ‘Simulation, Self-extinction, and Philosophy in the service of Civilization’ appeared in the journal AI & Society. Therein, Dr. White argues for the need to direct the development of technologies in overcoming extinction-level threats to human life on earth, most especially those resulting from bad leadership and failing political philosophies. He is going to talk about the potential for blockchain technologies in transitioning to an ideally democratic and openly cooperative society, with some attention to the role of education in preparing young people to engage in such a system going forward.
