Nick Bostrom
Macrostrategy Research Initiative, Founder
AI · Robotics, Digital Tech, Futurist

Nick Bostrom is the Founder and Principal Researcher of the Macrostrategy Research Initiative. He previously served as Professor in the Faculty of Philosophy at Oxford University and as the founding Director of the Future of Humanity Institute, a multidisciplinary research center at Oxford that brought together exceptional mathematicians, philosophers, scientists, and other scholars to examine global priorities and some of the most consequential questions facing humanity. The Future of Humanity Institute was home to work on AI safety, biosecurity, macrostrategy, the governance of artificial intelligence, and other foundational questions related to technology and the long-term future.

A Swedish-born philosopher and polymath, Bostrom has a background in theoretical physics, computational neuroscience, logic, artificial intelligence, and philosophy. He is the author of around 200 publications, including Anthropic Bias (Routledge, 2002), Global Catastrophic Risks (ed., OUP, 2008), Human Enhancement (ed., OUP, 2009), and Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies (OUP, 2014). Superintelligence, a New York Times bestseller, helped spark a global conversation on the future of artificial intelligence and its potential risks. His highly influential work spans philosophy, science, ethics, and technology, illuminating the connections between present-day choices and long-term global outcomes.

Bostrom is a recipient of the Eugene R. Gannon Award and has been named twice to Foreign Policy’s Top 100 Global Thinkers list. He was also included in Prospect’s World Thinkers list, where he was the youngest person ranked in the top 15. His writings have been translated into 28 languages, with more than 100 translations and reprints of his works. He is a repeat TED speaker and has given more than 2,000 interviews across television, radio, and print media. His publications have received more than 13,000 academic citations, and he has an h-index of 44.

In his 2024 book, Deep Utopia: Life and Meaning in a Solved World, Bostrom explores what an ideal life might look like if humanity successfully transitions into a post-superintelligence world. Rather than focusing on how fascinating such a future might appear from the outside, he asks how good it would be to actually live in. The book examines the philosophical, technological, and existential questions that may arise in a world where many of humanity’s major practical problems have been solved.
