Michael Spranger is the President of Sony AI, leading Sony’s strategic AI research organization, and the COO(Chief Operating Officer) of Sony Research, overseeing the AI and R&D strategy operations for the entire Sony Group.
The organization he heads, Sony AI, is a subsidiary founded by the Sony Group in 2020 to unleash human imagination and creativity through artificial intelligence. In 2025, Michael Spranger presented a new global standard for resolving data bias a critical ethical challenge in AI development by releasing the world’s first "Fair Human-Centric Image Benchmark."
He earned his German Diplom(Master’s degree) in Computer Science(Artificial Intelligence) from Humboldt University of Berlin and obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science(Artificial Intelligence) from Vrije Universiteit Brussel. During his doctoral studies, his academic excellence was recognized with an Honorable Mention awarded by the European Coordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence Ph.D. Award Committee.
Since beginning his journey with Sony as an Assistant Researcher at Sony CSL Paris, he has held various key positions, including Senior Research Scientist at the AI Collaboration Office of Sony Corporation, Senior Researcher at Sony Computer Science Laboratories, COO, and Distinguished Engineer. Beyond his roles within Sony, he has also driven external collaborative research, serving as the Research Co-Director for ICSL and Bellsystem24.
